Matildas draw a crowd of 50K in Brisbane in nail biting contest against Nigeria

Australia’s Nation Brand was on show when Australia played against Nigeria at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.

Almost 50,000 fans watched on at Brisbane Stadium on Thursday night when the Matildas played Nigeria in Brisbane/Meaanjin when the visiting Super Falcons defeated the Australians on their home turf with a score of 3-2.

Brisbane is the Matildas’ Team Base Camp during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™ and the last time they competed against Nigeria was in 2015 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in Canada when the Matildas were the victors.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese watched on in the stadium along with Senators Penny Wong and Richard Marles and the match was watched by 898,000 around the country, building on the 1.94 million national broadcast average audience for the Matilda’s opening game in Sydney.

FIFA has announced ticket sales have exceeded 1.5 million for the tournament, a new record for any FIFA Women’s World Cup™ event. By the end of the tournament, viewership is forecast to exceed 2 billion worldwide.

Australia’s Nation Brand was again on show at the match in Brisbane/Meaanjin.

Austrade’s General Manager, Communication and Marketing, Jessica Hamilton said:
